HELP FOR THE UNINSURED

To see the website for a list of all the different drug assistance programs,foundations their phone numbers, information for each drug company. I think this site has pretty worthy information when one is coping with an illness and the cost of medications are often overwhelming for those suffering with an illness.
I hope someone can get some help from this site and I wish ill health didn't cost so much to were it wipes one out financially...

Know Your Costs
If you need medical care and you have to pay for it yourself, try to find out how much you will have to pay. Sometimes it is hard to find out costs. And there may be more than one charge, such as one charge from the doctor and another from the hospital or clinic.
* Ask your doctor, hospital, or other provider what the service will cost.
* Ask if there is a discount for people who pay with cash or credit card. Ask if you can make payments.
* Every hospital must provide a list of its 25 most common procedures. These include inpatient services, like hip surgery, as well as outpatient services, like cataract surgery or colonoscopy. You can read these lists on the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development website.
* The law says that a hospital must give you a written estimate of hospital charges if you do not have insurance. The hospital must also give you information on financial aid programs and charity care.

Help for the Uninsured
Cancer creates heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. For people who don't have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including government-sponsored programs and services supported by non-profit organizations.
The best place to start a search for cancer services near where you live is with your state or local health department. Support groups are often listed in local newspapers.
Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their doctor, a medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

Cover the Uninsured Week is so crucial to those of us who don't have health insurance , or we do have it and it just doesn't cover what we really need for our health.I will use my own situation as an example .
I am under a county plan for my health needs. I have insulin dependent diabetes. At one time , they didn't cover insulin !
This county plan will fully cover diagnosis , but not treatment !
Example: I was diagnosed with sleep apnea , but they won't pay for a c-pap machine . Sleep apnea is where I stop breathing at night. The c-pap machine would help me breath .
Another example : I have fibromyalgia and arthritis and I need physical therapy . Guess what ? My insurance doesn't cover physical therapy .
This system enables disabled people to remain disabled .
In fact , this system makes a persons' disability worse by not providing the proper care.
THIS SYSTEM IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE ! ! !

NOTE : After reading more on the site above , I found that there is a "One time processing fee " of $10 for each medication . After this fee , your are supposed to get your meds at a huge savings . For any family going through the hardships of having a loved one with health problems , it can be a huge burden . I know . My daughter has insulin dependent diabetes , my parents have both had cancer , as have 3 grandparents . I have many major health problems myself .
Prayer is important . So is having a good faith base . Find a church that is real and that shows concern for your family.
Find support groups . Check out all the organizations related to your specific health needs . When in the hopital , ask for the medical social worker . Ask for food vouchers so you can get something to eat while being with your loved one in the hospital .
Don't be afraid to ask for help . This is a time when you need support ,and others who have been through this want to help you get through it too .

How Can I Advocate for Myself?
For a lot of people, it's tough to be your own advocate. It can be an intimidating process, but often we have no choice but to advocate for ourselves. The more prepared you are in advance, the better your chances of getting what you want.
Here's what you'll want to do to prepare yourself:
* Know the facts. Review any paperwork that you have received or submitted. Make note of key dates and as many of the important details as possible. Knowing your case well can put you way ahead of everyone else. If you are appealing your health plan's denial of a service, read the denial carefully to see why they are denying it. Use their reason as the basis for your argument to say why you should get the service.
* Keep good records. When you make a call about your insurance issue, take note of whom you talked to, the date and time, and what the conversation was about. Keep copies of all correspondence, both what you send and what you receive.
* Do your research. If your health plan is denying you a service or medication, check out some of the websites we link to on HealthCareCoach.com, or search the Internet for information about the service and why it is medically necessary or appropriate for your condition. Print out what you find and include it as part of your grievance or appeal.
* Practice what you want to say in advance. Run through your story with another person and ask for feedback.
* Figure out your bottom line. If there might be a compromise position, decide in advance how much you are willing to compromise or whether you are willing to compromise at all.
When you advocate your position:
* Tell your story. You lived it, so you know it best. Be organized and communicate the facts in a logical way.
* Stick to the important points. Figure out what is most important for the other person to hear and relay the information as concisely as possible.
* Concede the negative points. If there are negative things about your case, explain what occurred. You can take the impact out of the bad points and make them less negative.
* Be respectful, but firm. You will lose points in your case by being disrespectful of the other side. If the people opposed to you are disrespectful, the decision maker will notice this, but you keep your cool. Keep your focus on the story that you are telling.
* Have your evidence with you. Bring all relevant documents with you when you go to advocate your case. Make copies for the other side and for the decision maker ahead of time

FREE CLINICS
This site doesn't say , but my guess is that these are free clinics. You usually have to wait a long time in the lobby , but I have gone to one ,and the doctor was very kind and supportive. If you don't have a choice , try it. It is much better than letting yourself or loved one suffer.I personally suggest you bring an advocate with you. Someone who can help you navigate things and help you be a SQUEEKY WHEEL ! Also bring a good book , music and headphones , snack , drink. Prepare to camp out for a while.

hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities are required to provide a specific amount of free or below cost health care to people unable to pay. Eligibility is based on the size of your family and your income. You apply for Hill-Burton care at the facility where you were or will be treated. "
Steps to Apply for Hill-Burton Free or reduced-cost Care
- Find the Hill-Burton obligated facility nearest you from the list of Hill-Burton obligated facilities.
- Go to the facility's admissions or business office and ask for a copy of the Hill-Burton Individual Notice. The Individual Notice will tell you what income level makes you eligible for free or reduced-cost care, what services might be covered, and exactly where in the facility to apply.
- Go to the office listed in the Individual Notice and say you want to apply for Hill-Burton free or reduced-cost care. You may need to fill out a form.
- Gather any other required documents (such as a pay stub to prove income eligibility) and take or send them to the obligated facility.
- If you are asked to apply for Medicaid, Medicare, or some other financial assistance program, you must do so.
- When you return the completed application, ask for a Determination of Eligibility. Check the Individual Notice to see how much time the facility has before it must tell you whether or not you will receive free or reduced-cost care.

The SHARE Network
was originally founded in 1999 and went online on February 7th, 2000. Our main goal and mission is to provide an alternative means for obtaining services and equipment for those with special healthcare needs.
PURPOSE - To enable families and friends of persons with special needs to acquire services or equipment without financial restriction. This includes respite, transportation, home help, personal care, equipment and/or any other service an individual may need. Providing education. To allow those who want to make a difference and volunteer their time and skill, services, or equipment, to have an avenue to do so. To provide a means for exchanging equipment or services. To provide a free advertising of low cost or free services and equipment, or services and equipment available for exchange.

Grants of up to $2,500 nationally and $1,000 internationally are available to individuals, as well as churches and other Christian organizations.

This is especially good for someone who can't get out to rent movies, or doesn't have enough money to buy movies. You have to prove that you're disabled or that you have long-term chronic disease in order to have programs and to movies, but it's worth it if you can prove it, and it looks like they send really good movies! What are Adult Home Help Services?
Adult Home Help Services or AHHS, formerly known as Chore Services, provides money to people with disabilities, older adults and people who are blind, to hire someone to help them care for themselves. You must apply for AHHS through your local Family Independence Agency.
AHHS provides funds so you may pay someone to help you with those necessary daily activities you cannot perform without assistance. Some of those activities may include:
bathing,
dressing,
taking medication,
shopping and errands, housework,
laundry, and
meal preparation and clean up.
