Know Your Costs

If you need medical care and you have to pay for it yourself, try to find out how much you will have to pay. Sometimes it is hard to find out costs. And there may be more than one charge, such as one charge from the doctor and another from the hospital or clinic.

    * Ask your doctor, hospital, or other provider what the service will cost.
    * Ask if there is a discount for people who pay with cash or credit card. Ask if you can make payments.
    * Every hospital must provide a list of its 25 most common procedures. These include inpatient services, like hip surgery, as well as outpatient services, like cataract surgery or colonoscopy. You can read these lists on the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development website.
    * The law says that a hospital must give you a written estimate of hospital charges if you do not have insurance. The hospital must also give you information on financial aid programs and charity care.

Cancer Survivorship-Help for the Uninsured

Click the link to access the following information, cancer home and cancer survivorship.

Help for the Uninsured

Cancer creates heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. For people who don't have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including government-sponsored programs and services supported by non-profit organizations.

The best place to start a search for cancer services near where you live is with your state or local health department. Support groups are often listed in local newspapers.

Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their doctor, a medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

The National Cancer Institute has a list of organizations and agencies that may be able to help with health care costs at Financial Assistance and Other Resources for People with Cancer.External Web Site Icon

Some pharmaceutical companies offer patient assistance programs to help pay for medications. To learn about whether a specific drug might be available at reduced cost through such a program, talk with your doctor or a medical social worker, or visit the drug manufacturer's Web site and look for Patient Assistance Programs.

ALERT ! DON'T FORGET COVER THE UNINSURED WEEK ! ! !

The American Cancer Society says uninsured patients are 60 percent more likely to die within five years of their diagnosis. Without insurance, the diagnosis is twice as likely to come in the later stages of cancer.

STORIES OF PEOPLE DYING .You don't have to be poor to die from lack of insurance !

http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/04/25/cancer.windsor/index.html?eref=rss_mostpopular

Cover the Uninsured Week is so crucial to those of us who don't have health insurance , or we do have it and it just doesn't cover what we really need for our health.I will use my own situation as an example .

I am under a county plan for my health needs. I have insulin dependent diabetes. At one time , they didn't cover insulin !

This county plan will  fully cover diagnosis , but not treatment !

Example: I was diagnosed with sleep apnea , but they won't pay for a c-pap machine . Sleep apnea is where I stop breathing at night. The c-pap machine would help me breath .

Another example : I have fibromyalgia and arthritis and I need physical therapy . Guess what ? My insurance doesn't cover physical therapy .

This system enables disabled people to remain disabled .

In fact , this system makes a persons' disability worse by not providing the proper care.

THIS SYSTEM  IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE ! ! !

_________________________________________________________

Where can we go for help , and what can we do to help ?

REMEMBER :

If you are not part of the solution , you are part of the problem !

Here is one organization that is part of the solution

Selected quotes from the Cover the Disabled website :

"The Situation

Forty-seven million Americans are uninsured. Nearly 9 million of them are children. More than 8 out of 10 are in working families. They are our friends, neighbors and colleagues--forced to gamble every day that they won't get sick or injured.

Living without health insurance is a risk no one should have to take.

The Response

Cover the Uninsured, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is a national effort to highlight the fact that too many Americans are living without health insurance and to demand solutions from our nation's leaders.

Last year, Congress demonstrated unprecedented bipartisan support for an expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to cover more of America's kids. Broad-based coalitions from across the country and our nation's governors have joined together in the fight.

The time for change is now.

Cover the Uninsured Week 2008 will take place April 27 – May 3 with thousands of activities across the country. We hope you will join the nation in helping make health coverage for the uninsured a top priority. "

I put the topic in quotes because some of these sources are well know (medicaid/medicare) However , I included this reference because there are also less known resoures for medical help mixed in with the common sources. Especially for children , but also for adults. I belong to a medical plan that is only offered in the county that I live in. To find out if you have a program , check out the link to your state.

Here is another great and current page about how to get your medications if you don't have the money to pay for them . There are also programs to help with paying co-pay costs.

Don't go without your medications ! ! !

There are programs out there to help you ! ! !

http://www.freemedicine.com/

NOTE : After reading more on the site above , I found that there is a "One time processing fee " of $10 for each medication .  After this fee , your are supposed to get your meds at a huge savings . Please read all information on this site and see what you think . Most doctors know of programs that are ABSOLUTELY FREE with no "processing fee "Still , this is a good program if you are in a situation where you make too much for medicaid or there is a big co-pay , and the income limit is much higher than most . I would still check this out and make sure that they are valid by asking your doctor about them . Or call the Better Business Bureau.

03/21/09

This site offers help to find free meds. with over 1,000 programs that you can access . I looked all over the site and read their rules and I didn't find any charge that you would have to pay to use this service. Everything is clearly laid out and the process seems easy to go through to get your medications. They also provide information to find community clinics and free clinics. Check both links as they each have different listings for your area.

http://www.patientassistance.com/

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH PROGRAM VERY CAREFULLY .

IT WILL BE A WASTE OF YOUR TIME , AND A WASTE OF THE PROGRAM'S TIME IF YOU APPLY FOR SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO RECIEVE.

_____________________________________________________________________

For any family going through the hardships of having a loved one with health problems , it can be a huge burden . I know . My daughter has insulin dependent diabetes , my parents have both had cancer , as have 3 grandparents . I have many major health problems myself .

Prayer is important . So is having a good faith base . Find a church that is real and that shows concern for your family.

Find support groups . Check out all the organizations related to your specific health needs . When in the hopital , ask for the medical social worker . Ask for food vouchers so you can get something to eat while being with your loved one in the hospital .

Don't be afraid to ask for help . This is a time when you need support ,and others who have been through this want to help you get through it too .

11/09/08

Do you have insurance , but it doesn't cover your medications co-pay or your medications are just too expensive ? You are underinsured. If you are underinsured and you need help paying for your meds , check this program out . Here is thier description :

"Our Co-Pay Assistance Programs

The Chronic Disease Fund is one of the few charitable organizations to provide direct and immediate financial assistance to underinsured patients with chronic disease, cancers or life-altering conditions who cannot afford the co-payments for the expensive medications they need.

Patients who cannot afford their medications must fight two battles— their disease and the financial burden it places on their families. Though most patients with chronic or life-altering diseases have private insurance or a Medicare Part D plan, it is estimated that over 35% still cannot afford the co-pays or deductibles for their medications.

Underinsured patients are not eligible for most free drug or patient assistance programs, leaving them with few alternatives. If they can’t afford to fill or refill their prescriptions, they may be forced to do without their medications, go into debt to obtain them, reduce the dosage or stop taking them against doctor’s orders, any of which can have a serious effect on a patient’s health and quality of life.

Our organization helps this underserved population of patients obtain the expensive medications they need but cannot afford even with insurance. By funding their prescription drug co-payments and providing free therapy management services, we can ease their financial burden, ensure them access to the medications they need, enable them to experience the full benefits of their treatment by increasing drug compliance, and assist them in monitoring their health and disease progression over time. "

MORE ABOUT BEING YOUR OWN HEALTH CARE ADVOCATE

Written Materials on Health Care Coach

Sharing knowledge and empowering others to get the most out of their health insurance is our mission. Please feel free to print out, download, or share the written information posted on our website. Materials you obtain from our website should include reference to our site as the source for the materials. Materials obtained from our website may not be used for commercial purposes.

How Can I Advocate for Myself?

For a lot of people, it's tough to be your own advocate. It can be an intimidating process, but often we have no choice but to advocate for ourselves. The more prepared you are in advance, the better your chances of getting what you want.

Here's what you'll want to do to prepare yourself:

    * Know the facts. Review any paperwork that you have received or submitted. Make note of key dates and as many of the important details as possible. Knowing your case well can put you way ahead of everyone else. If you are appealing your health plan's denial of a service, read the denial carefully to see why they are denying it. Use their reason as the basis for your argument to say why you should get the service.

    * Keep good records. When you make a call about your insurance issue, take note of whom you talked to, the date and time, and what the conversation was about. Keep copies of all correspondence, both what you send and what you receive.

    * Do your research. If your health plan is denying you a service or medication, check out some of the websites we link to on HealthCareCoach.com, or search the Internet for information about the service and why it is medically necessary or appropriate for your condition. Print out what you find and include it as part of your grievance or appeal.

    * Practice what you want to say in advance. Run through your story with another person and ask for feedback.

    * Figure out your bottom line. If there might be a compromise position, decide in advance how much you are willing to compromise or whether you are willing to compromise at all.

      When you advocate your position:

    * Tell your story. You lived it, so you know it best. Be organized and communicate the facts in a logical way.

    * Stick to the important points. Figure out what is most important for the other person to hear and relay the information as concisely as possible.

    * Concede the negative points. If there are negative things about your case, explain what occurred. You can take the impact out of the bad points and make them less negative.

    * Be respectful, but firm. You will lose points in your case by being disrespectful of the other side. If the people opposed to you are disrespectful, the decision maker will notice this, but you keep your cool. Keep your focus on the story that you are telling.

    * Have your evidence with you. Bring all relevant documents with you when you go to advocate your case. Make copies for the other side and for the decision maker ahead of time

Here is something that I need to do myself - update my medical I.D. information . This site has 2 ways you can have an I.D. for free.

To Up Date Your Medical Card you have to complete a new card
because MedIDs.com does not retain your medical data.

Medical errors are one of the Nation's leading causes of death and injury. A recent report by the Institute of Medicine estimates that as many as 44,000 to 98,000 people die in U.S. hospitals each year as the result of medical errors. This means that more people die from medical errors than from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS. ( Partially because they don't have the right information about the patient-sl)

TOLL-FREE NUMBER/CONDITION SEARCH PAGE

Another way to find help is through organizations .  This site has an alphabetical conditions' list that will lead you to two things : toll-free numbers and the names of organizations related to the condition.

An example would be to look under diabetes . This might result in a page that included numbers as well as the names of diabetes organizations. When you go to the diabetes organization website that might be listed , you may find links on that page to financial resources for diabetics.

 FREE CLINICS

This site doesn't say , but my guess is that these are free clinics. You usually have to wait a long time in the lobby , but I have gone to one ,and the doctor was very kind and supportive. If you don't have a choice , try it.  It is much better than letting yourself or loved one suffer.I personally suggest you bring an advocate with you. Someone who can help you navigate things and help you be a SQUEEKY WHEEL ! Also bring a good book , music and headphones , snack , drink. Prepare to camp out for a while.

Need to see a Doctor?

This Web site will help you find a clinic that will give you medical care, even if you have no medical insurance or money.

This Web site provides the address and contact information for clinics that offer Primary Medical, Obstetrical and Gynecological, Dental, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Care, Other Types of Medical and Support Services.

Hill-Burton Free & Reduced Cost Care at

hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities are required to provide a specific amount of free or below cost health care to people unable to pay. Eligibility is based on the size of your family and your income. You apply for Hill-Burton care at the facility where you were or will be treated. "

Steps to Apply for Hill-Burton Free or reduced-cost Care

  1. Find the Hill-Burton obligated facility nearest you from the list of Hill-Burton obligated facilities.
  2. Go to the facility's admissions or business office and ask for a copy of the Hill-Burton Individual Notice. The Individual Notice will tell you what income level makes you eligible for free or reduced-cost care, what services might be covered, and exactly where in the facility to apply.
  3. Go to the office listed in the Individual Notice and say you want to apply for Hill-Burton free or reduced-cost care. You may need to fill out a form.
  4. Gather any other required documents (such as a pay stub to prove income eligibility) and take or send them to the obligated facility.
  5. If you are asked to apply for Medicaid, Medicare, or some other financial assistance program, you must do so.
  6. When you return the completed application, ask for a Determination of Eligibility. Check the Individual Notice to see how much time the facility has before it must tell you whether or not you will receive free or reduced-cost care.

More about Hill-Burton Free or Reduced-Cost Care

You are eligible to apply for Hill-Burton free care if your income is at or below the current HHS Poverty Guidelines. You may be eligible for Hill-Burton reduced-cost care if your income is as much as two times (triple for nursing home care) the HHS Poverty Guidelines.

help with catastrophic illnesses and other major medical difficulties.Their goal is to help people with long-term challenges.

BEYOND THE RAINBOW DOT ORG

I have included quite a lot of information from the following page, but I thought it was important to see how some people care about other people and the kind way that they word their information makes it very readable.

When A Helping Hand Is Needed Most!

"Catastrophic illness can strike at any time. Unfortunately, unexpected medical crises are a fact of life. The impact that such events have on a family can be devastating on many levels. While most of us do our best to be prepared for such situations, there are always unplanned expenses and responsibilities that arise. Few are completely ready for such a traumatic and painful event.

Sudden illness demands the utmost emotional strength so that the ill or injured family member is given the necessary support to survive and recover. While our emotional reserves in such difficult circumstances often prove to be deeper than most suspect, financial reserves eventually run out. A sudden illness in a family can be as difficult financially as it is emotionally. During those times of extremes, stress, pain, and hope, Pennies from Heaven is there to help.

Time is not the only factor that will help to minimize the chaos that arises from unexpected medical emergencies. Pennies from Heaven works hard to bring financial and emotional stability back into the lives of families affected by unexpected illness or medical emergencies.

We are a small non-profit charity supported solely by tax-deductible contributions. We locate affected families and offer financial and logistical support to assist them in making the long- and short-term care of their loved one easier.

Even families with comprehensive medical insurance coverage incur many out-of-pocket expenses when dealing with unexpected medical events. The cost of eating out at restaurants, the additional gasoline for repeated trips to the hospital, phone calls to family members and physicians, airfare, etc., can all take a serious financial toll. We'd rather that they were able to focus their attentions on supporting their loved one(s) in need rather than on the stresses of sudden and extensive financial responsibilities.

Supporting sick or injured family members can quickly become a financial as well as emotional hardship. Our financial and logistical assistance helps directly with the former while positively affecting the latter. Pennies from Heaven helps those families caring for those who need it the most.

Pennies from Heaven has four programs that allow us to provide logistical and financial aid to family members going through what all of us dread, but many of us must face – a sudden medical crisis. "

 assistance with equipment

and  services  for for special health care needs

The SHARE Network

was originally founded in 1999 and went online on February 7th, 2000. Our main goal and mission is to provide an alternative means for obtaining services and equipment for those with special healthcare needs.

PURPOSE - To enable families and friends of persons with special needs to acquire services or equipment without financial restriction. This includes respite, transportation, home help, personal care, equipment and/or any other service an individual may need.  Providing education.  To allow those who want to make a difference and volunteer their time and skill, services, or equipment, to have an avenue to do so. To provide a means for exchanging equipment or services. To provide a free advertising of low cost or free services and equipment, or services and equipment available for exchange.

GOAL - All those who "need" should be free from a sense of imposing on one another and not be afraid to ask for help. All those who have extra, will "SHARE" what they have. This is our goal.  We want everyone who needs services or equipment to have an alternative place to go.

The League of Human Dignity believes that all of us have the right to decide where we live, work, and play.

At some point in our lives most of us will experience limitations that affect our personal independence. Whether these disabilities are temporary, progressive, or permanent, they should not prevent us from living the lives we choose.

In addition to physical, mental, or emotional disabilities, we may also be faced with external barriers. These obstacles to independence may be architectural, social, or attitudinal. They could be personal, work-related, or community-wide barriers.

DIABETES

The following says it all . Diabetes is an expensive disease !

"Diabetes treatment is expensive. According to the

American Diabetes Association,

people who have this disease spend an average of $13,243 a year on health care expenses.

Many people who have diabetes need help paying some of the bills. It's a good idea to start by looking for an insurance plan that covers as many diabetes-related expenses as possible. A variety of governmental and nongovernmental programs exist to help, depending on whether you qualify."
